In a brief interview with our cricview correspondent Ambikesh Tiwari, the 28 year old , Micheal Rippon spoke on his cricket and career.
Question: How are you looking at your career after perfoming very well with both bat and ball in New Zealand domestic cricket ?
Michael Rippon : Thank you. It was nice to contribute to the team that had a good season as a whole. For me personally, I’m obviously striving to play for the Blackcaps one day and the next stepping stone in my career would be to play for the A team. There is a tour to India in August but let’s see what happens with Covid-19 issue, whether or not the tour will take place. There are quality spinners and allrounders already in New Zealand so it definitely won’t be an easy team to break into.
Question : Share your last year journey with Vancouver knights in Global t20.
Michael Rippon : It was such a fantastic experience. Playing with different players from all over the world, it was just amazing and especially to tour a place like Canada. Who would have thought cricket would take you to such incredible places! Our squad was world class with the likes of Gayle, Russel, Malik. To be in the same dressing room as them was an absolute privilege. We got to the final of the tournament and lost in a last ball thriller to the Winnipeg hawks. Andre Russel was from another planet that day.
Question : You also did very well for Netherlands team in International cricket. Any particular reason for leaving Netherlands?
Michael Rippon : I got offered an overseas contract with the Volts in January 2017 whilst on tour with the Netherlands in the desert T20 in Dubai. I went over to New Zealand initially for a month to fill in for injured spinner Mark Craig. After a couple weeks, they asked me if I would like to stay for a longer period and they offered me another contract. At the time, it didn’t affect my cricket with the Netherlands. I still played a lot for them. It wasn’t till November 2017 , I think when the ICC changed the eligibility rules. The rules required me to stay home in New Zealand for 10 months of the year until you’ve qualified. Hope that makes sense.
Question : Have you been inspired by any legend cricketer?
Michael Rippon : Shane Warne, Jacques Kallis. Sachin Tendulkar. The best of the best. Would watch them for hours.
Question : How are you doing your fitness training in quarantine?
Michael Rippon : It’s going good! I’m in a temporary air b n b at the moment (a temporary accomodation) which is located on a hill close to a park so I’ve been getting some good runs and workouts in. I’ve been doing the Otago cricket workout challenges which I’ve been posting daily on my Instagram if anyone out there is willing to give them a go.
Question : Any IPL franchise you love to play?
Michael Rippon : RCB would be a dream.. However, just being involved in the IPL would be an unbelievable experience.
Question: Message for youngsters ?
Michael Rippon : Whack the ball and spin it big
