1st Test on Pakistan soil after 10 years : Moment of history

Srilanka breaks the ice, to play 2 tests on Pakistan soil

It is 10 years since that extremely fearful terrorist attack on SriLankan team bus at Gaddafi stadium ,Lahore in March 2009 , that threatened to wipe off the SriLankan team consisting of legends Jayavardene, Sangakkara and Muralidharan.  Fittingly after a decade long wait, and rejuvenated security arrangements, it’s the same Srilankan team that is visiting Pakistan again after that fateful series. Couple of months back  Srilankans visited Pakistan to play bilateral T20 and one day series ,which finally helped in breaking the ice. The last test series that Srilanka played in Pakistan’s adopted home in UAE turned out to be a huge success for the visitors as they whitewashed the hosts 2-0 in the two test series with Herath causing mayhem. As for the current series, this is a great moment for cricket fans in Pakistan as test cricket is finally coming home after a decade long wait.

With the first test at Rawalpindi,  high profile security has been put on alert, to prevent any untoward recurrence , as the teams embark upon the momentous occasion.  Both Pakistan and Srilanka have lots to play for. Srilanka are on 60 test championships points whereas Pakistan are yet to open their account after their horror show in Australia where they were simply annihilated in both tests. The host will in all probabily go into this series with the same core team. Probably they will play batter  Fawad Alam who is reportedly in good domestic form . Else not much changes expected . In all probability Shaheen Afridi, Mohammed Abbas and Naseem Shah will be their pace composition and Yasir Shah being the leg spin option. As for Srlianka , their batting needs to fire more often . With Kusal Mendes, Kusal Parera, Anjelo Mathews around, the middle order is looking solid . However their bowlers need to pick up wickets overseas and there is no Rangana Herath around this time. The pitch is expected to aid batting and help spin as match progresses.

Let’s hope that the series starts on a good note as Pakistan needs to play in front of their home crowd to resurrect their fortunes. Cricket world needs a stable and stronger Pakistan in test cricket and a stronger Srilanka as well.
