We are just hours away from the biggest blockbuster match of the World Cup featuring India v Pakistan . As we are aware ,it has been Indians who have dominated Pakistan in World cups winning all 6 contests that they have played since the 1st game in 1992. Here we will go through the best Indian performers in Indo Pak World cup showdowns.
Sachin Tendulkar : Sachin has been simply the finest Indian performer vs Pakistan in World cup games. His scores vs Pakistan accross 5 World cups were 54no, 31, 45, 98 and 85. His best 3 performances were in 1992, 2003 and 2011 World Cups . In his 1st World cup in 1992 the then 17 year old played a matured innings of 54 notout on a slow pitch at SCG and then took 1/37 in his 10 overs as the 5th bowler which was the the important wicket of Aamir Sohail who scored 62 and was looking dangerous. Sachin’s next best performance ( probably his best) came at Centurion in 2003 World Cup where chasing a big target of 273 ,Sachin came out all guns blazing and took on Shoaib Akhtar’s 150 kph thunderbolts hitting his first ball for 6 over third man and that one shot deflated the strong Pakistan bowling attack as Sachin went on to score a brilliant 98 off 75 balls laced with spectacular strokes all round the park. Based on Sachin’s strong foundation Dravid and Yuvraj finally closed out that game for India. Sachin made another big contribution in his last World Cup game vs Pakistan in a tense encounter in Mohali scoring 85 runs . Not his most fluent innings but very valuable in the context of India winning the game . Thus Sachin has been India’s most dominant player vs Pakistan in World cups.
Kapil Dev : India’s greatest allrounder was playing his last World cup in 1992 when India played their first ever World Cup match vs Pakistan and what a great game he had !! On the pitch at Sydney where everyone struggled to bat fluently, Kapil came out and played a fluent 35 off 26 balls and hit the only six of that game off Mushtaq Ahmed. Then when India bowled, Kapil was tight and moved the ball just enough to get the vital wicket of Inzamam Lbw very cheaply .Later he went on to add one more wicket to finish at 2/30 and thus capped off a fine allround show helping India to finally beat Pakistan convincingly.
Navjot Singh Sidhu: Navjot Sidhu has always been a success vs Pakistan in all formats. In the India v Pakistan match in 1996 World cup in Bangalore , Sidhu provided a great start scoring 93 off 115 balls with 11 fours against a strong Pakistan bowling attack. His neat strokeplay and choice of the right balls to hit put India in a position of strength in a high tension game.Later great finishes by Azharuddin and Jadeja helped India to amass 287 which finally proved a match winning score.
Ajay Jadeja : While Sidhu provided the foundation in the Pakistan game of 1996 World cup , Jadeja played a blinder at the end scoring 45 off 25 balls and taking Waqar Younis to the cleaners smashing him for a couple of sixes and fours to put India into the drivers seat. His brutal hitting of Waqar sent the crowd wild with excitement and set up the game for the Indian bowlers who finally took India to victory after a strong Pakistan resistance.
Venkatesh Prasad: Prasad had been one of the best new ball bowlers for India in late 1990s. His finest moment came in the India v Pakistan World Cup game at Manchester in 1999 . India batting 1st got 227/8 with Dravid (61) and Sachin (45) as main scorers .In reply Pakistan struggled with ball moving around and Venkatesh Prasad came out with his best ever spell of swing bowling moving the ball enough to trap Malik lbw, hit the outside edge of a dangerous Saeed Anwar(36), got a freestroking Moin Khan (34) off a short ball, trapped Inzamam (41) lbw with an in cutter and finally had Wasim caught in the deep by Kumble to take India to a brilliant win by 47 runs in a low scoring game. Prasad finishing with 5/27 to win the man of the match award as the Indian fans were rejoicing at Manchester.
Virat Kohli : Finally an Indian scores a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match. Tendulkar (98) and Sidhu (93) missed out narrowly in the past. India played their last World Cup match vs Pakistan till date in 2015 World Cup at Adelaide. Batting 1st on a flat pitch , Kohli (107 off 126) batted superbly , playing solidly and picking the right balls to hit boundaries and built up a solid stand with Shikhar Dhawan (73). Later Suresh Raina provided the strong finish to take India to 300. Pakistan in reply were never in the hunt and lost comprehensively by 76 runs with Mohammed Shami taking 4/35 . Virat was the man of the match and till date the only Indian batsman to hit a 100 vs Pakistan in World Cup.
Suresh Raina: A brilliant 76 of 56 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes in the India v Pakistan World Cup encounter at Adelaide in 2015. After the foundation was led by Virat and Dhawan . Raina came out firing on all cylinders and smashed the Pakistan attack in a belligerent display to put India in a strong position from where they never looked back and beat Pakistan for the sixth straight time in a World Cup.
