Brendan Taylor , in current generation has been Zimbabwe’s one of the most prolific batsman with strong ability to play well in crisis. Sadly due to Zimbabwe’s sluggish existence in international cricket , his talent has not got its best due. However he has been one of the mainstays of Zimbabwe’s batting and has a good strike rate of centuries. He has scored 2055 runs till date in 31 tests at 35 plus average and 6 hundreds. In 196 ODIs he scored 6300 plus runs with 10 hundreds and 76 strike rate and has effected 154 dismissals and has scored 800 plus runs in 40 T20 internationals.
Brendan gave his valuable time to our correspondent Ambikesh Tiwari and spoke about the game . Excepts :
How shocking was the news when ICC banned Zimbabwe cricket ?
Yes initially it was a devastating time for the Zimbabwean players not knowing the future. Fortunately ICC and Zimbabwe cricket board came together that that give the cricketers another chance and refocus on our game . So great to be back.
How did you got involved in the game of cricket ?
Got interested in cricket at 6-7 years age , helped by Campbell brothers ,Alistair (Former Zimbabwe captain) and Donald who nurtured me as a cricketer and I just kept playing the game.
Brilliant 138 vs India in that Worldcup 2015 game. How did you enjoy it ? Share your thoughts about that match ?
Zimbabwe were struggling at 40/3 but we rebuild very well to get 290, India lost the openers and Kohli cheaply but Dhoni and Raina carried them through , Raina dropped by us on way to a match winning 100 which proved costly. It was my last game before going on a 3 year contract in England , I played without pressure and it was nice to judge myself against the best team.
As a senior player, how did you motivate youngsters?
Needs to lead by example .start training early leave later. Passing of advice to younger players and moulding their future.
Who have been your favourite cricketing idol ?
Andy Flower is my number 1 cricket idol , Zimbabwe’s best ever batsman, led by example , hard individual, mentally strong. Gilchrist is my 2nd favourite and the great Sachin after that. Still enjoy Sachin’s batting to this day.
Favourite knock till date ?
171 in Test match vs Bangladesh, got another 100 in 2nd innings and won the test. Very satisfying innings . Another innings I value a lot was 30 to 40 odd vs Pakistan, batted long enough with the tail to get crucial runs and at the end won the test by 25 runs, that innings I value even higher as Pakistan are a better side.
Currently best batsman ?
Virat Kohli as he has better record than Smith, Root and Williamson accross all formats. Very consistent.
Your favourite cricket format ?
Clearly test cricket. It’s the toughest challenge. Can speak the same on behalf of all players. ODIS T20s are good fun but Test cricket is above all.
Your view on 4 day tests?
Not a big fan of that. I prefer 5 day tests but the decision rests with the high powers .
At the age of 35 you are a very fit cricketer. How do you keep fit yourself ?
It’s a big part , doing stretching, core exercises, power games etc. Being in a technical sport have to work on my batting all the time.
Your best buddy in dressing room ?
Different dynamics , different characters. Charles Coventry, Greame Cremer were my best mates but they have moved to other careers . However getting on well with other mates.
Your Hobbies ?
Golf. Also enjoy spending time with my kids.
Any message for young cricketers ?
Follow your dreams ,work hard and do your best to realise your dreams ( in any field).
