The month long Carribean Premier league 2019 came to an end with fancied Guyana Amazon Warriors led by Shoaib Malik went down by 27 runs against Barbados Tridents led by Jason Holder at the Brian Lara cricket academy. With the T20 World cup one year away ,these high profile franchisee T20 leagues has assumed much importance. Once again the importance of winning the toss and batting 1st in the knockouts was illustrated by the winners as they chose to put runs on the board, always an advantage in a final.
Tridents were off to a good start with Alex Hales being the aggressor and they made use of the powerplay well before Hales was caught in the deep for 28 (24 balls). Johnson Charles (39 off 22) showed his talent for quality strokes before his dismissal sparked off a mini collapse with allrounders Holder(1) and Shakib (15) being runout. With 5 overs left, the Tridents were languishing at 114/6 ,and at this point southpaw Jonathan Carter played the innings of the game ,playing dazzling shots in his 50 notout off 27 balls to take Tridents to 171/6 with help of a 50 plus unbeaten stand with Nurse (19 off 15), always a challenging score for a final. Imran Tahir was the most economical bowler for Warriors with 1/24 off 4 overs.
In reply , the favourites just could not get their innings going as their famed middle order of Malik, Heytmer, Pooran (24) and Rutherford (15) failed to fire and could not provide the support required by Brendon King who looked impressive in his 43 off 33 balls. Medium fast L.Riefer was brilliant in picking up wickets getting 4/24 ,strangling the middle order along with T20 specialist Harry Gurney (2/24) ,Nurse (2/17) and Walsh Jr (1/23). Warriors who were unbeaten in this years tournament till that point could not handle the pressure of chasing in the final to lose by 27 runs. Jonathan Carter for his match turning 50 notout was the player of the match and will surely attract IPL franchisee owners in the forthcoming auction.
Talented opener of Guyana Warriors ,Brendon King with 496 runs (top score of 132*) and Hayden Walsh with 22 wickets (best 5/19) were the top rungetter and wickettaker respectively in CPL T20 2019.
