After their spine chilling superover game at the Kotla , both Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders lock horns at Eden Gardens for a very important game ,the ultimate winner of which can take a step forward to playoff qualifications. This game assumes another importance as Kolkata’s favourite son Sourav Ganguly will be sitting in Delhi dugout and hence there is a chance of Delhi enjoying a bit of crowd support from a large number of pro- Dada fans who still feel that KKR has wronged Sourav in earlier years of IPL. It’s a similar situation of a KKR v Pune Warriors match in 2012 edition at Eden Gardens when the eden crowd was divided in the support for KKR or Sourav led PW.
The hosts irrespective of their latest crushing loss to CSK at Chennai ,are the favourites to win this tie mainly due to the presence of one Andre Russell in their ranks ,who is singlehandedly winning games and hitting colossal sixes. Of the other senior batsmen, both Utthappa and Dinesh Karthik are looking forward to get some bigger scores as is Chris Lynn. However a spin dominated bowling attack for KKR will have their work cut out on a lively Eden pitch more suited to fast bowling . With good carry available, tearaway quick Lockie Ferguson might get a game and may partner Prasidh Krishna who is bowling with pace and carry.
Delhi Capitals fast bowlers will enjoy bowing on this pitch and they have two World class fast bowlers in Rabada and Boult with Indians Ishant Sharma and Avesh Khan to choose from. Like KKR , Delhi have a pretty good spinners in Lamichhane and Amit Mishra to add balance to their attack.
Delhi batting looks a settled lineup but they have shown their fragility in chasing totals in close games. Also their batters Shikhar Dhawan,Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant require to put more runs on the board. They have been very patchy in their performances and that has hurt them in few games already. However with a faster deck on offer , the Delhi strokeplayers should be more comfortable batting at Eden Gardens. Prithvi Shaw, who scored 99 in their last face-off at Kotla will be watched with added interest and the Eden pitch should help his batting style. Coach Ponting and advisor Sourav Ganguly would be looking for more consistency in their team.
Weather forecast appears to be a bit worrisome with afternoon showers predicted, however the modern drainage system at Eden can quickly absorb the water for the game to resume faster.
All in all, a very exciting match on the cards.
