The Road safety World series for legends is turning out to be a blockbuster as India and Srilanka played out a thrilling low scoring game at a packed DY Patil stadium. Irfan Pathan proved to be India’s hero for the evening having played a sensational innings of 57 off 31 balls right at the end to steal the game away from the Srilankans who until Irfan’s innings looked well in control having won the previous game against Australia in another thrilling fixture two days back.
Put into to bat Srilanka started decently with skipper Dilshan and keeper Kulwitharna both scoring in twenties to take Lankans to 45 in first 7 overs. However once the stand was broken , Indian bowlers led by Munaf Patel strangled the rest of the Srilankan batting as a result the tourists folded up for 138 in 20 overs.
Set 139 to win , India were soon jolted by Chaminda Vaas as he had both Sachin and Yuvraj out cheaply , caught off ambitious shots while Sehwag was runout soon. Kaif settled down well and had a crucial partnership with Sanjay Bangar (18) but India just could not get the big shots as the asking rate shot up. Coming at fall of Bangar’s wicket Irfan took a while to settle down as Indians looked for big hits. Meanwhile Kaif (46) was dismissed after a fine knock and with India now almost resigned to fate, Irfan in company of Gony took on Mahroof in the 18th over hitting glorious straight sixes and took 26 runs to calm the Indian nerves .Gony too hit a big six and in the 19th over Irfan with a flurry of boundaries and sealed the game sensationally in India’s favour . Though Munaf bowled beautifully, Irfan’s match winning 57 off 31 balls from a hopeless situation was enough to earn him the man of the match as Indian legends win unexpectedly by 5 wickets.
