India has notched up their first winning points in the World test championships with a massive 318 run win over a hapless West Indies with Jasprit Bumrah at his devastating best in West Indies 2nd innings. After his World Cup success Bumrah was rested for the T20s and ODIs but was back in the side for the 2 tests . He was rusty in the West Indies first innings getting 1-55 but in the 2nd innings he was lethal with his fuller seaming deliveries sending stumps cartwheeling on more than two occasions and looked unplayable. He was too good for a mediocre Windies batting lineup in which there are hardly any batsmen who averages in the 40s in tests. 5 wickets for just 7 runs were astonishing figures as West Indies needing a mammoth 419 to win were bundled out for 100 runs after being 56/9 , with Kemar Roach top scoring with 38 and thus having a good match with bat and ball. Ishant Sharma took 3 more wickets in 2nd innings to finish with 8 for the match and Shami also looked impressive.
Earlier ,after West Indies were allout for 222 in 1st innings, the Indians managed 343/7 declared in 2nd innings with Ajinkha Rahane scoring a fine 103 filled with impressive strokes ,his first 100 for India in overseas tests in two years. Rahane had a useful partnership with Kohli(51) and later Hanuma Vihari (93) who missed his 1st test ton by 7 runs but played with confidence. Earlier both openers could not build on their starts with Rahul (38) again getting out after well settled. Rahul was later asked in press conference on his batting, and he expressed his disappointment at not making good his starts, saying that probably more patience is required. He further stated that he did not feel any technical issues in his batting when he was not scoring runs in Australia and it was only going through a poor run. Rahane was the player of the match for his two knocks of 81 and 103.
After good knocks from Rahane and Vihari ,and Rahul getting some runs, it looks tighter for Rohit Sharma to get into the team. The ODI legend, after his phenomenal World cup success ,was looking to revive his test career but the Indian thinktank persisted with Vihari, Rahane and Rahul to start the series.
West Indies had beaten England 2-1 in their home test series in March and hence there was some expectations before this test series. Unfortunately for Test cricket, West Indies once again slipped down to mediocrity and were resoundingly hammered by India with their batsmen proving inadequate in their technique and temperament to face impressive Indian fast bowling. Due to the mediocrity of the West Indies team, this series is also not followed in India with great interest with Ashes seem to be taking the limelight.
However Kohli and his men are not to be deterred as they get into the points table with full 60 points and look poised to double the points tally. For West Indies , they need lots to go their way, to challenge India.
