Arundhati Reddy’s 4-wicket haul went in vain as Nuzhat Parween scored 51 and helped India Blue to register a convincing win in the first match of Under-23 One Day Challenger Trophy.
India Red won the toss and chose to bat first. But the openers couldn’t provide with a great start as S Meghana fell very cheaply. Another opener CH Jhansi Lakshmi and captain Harleen Deol tried to steady the ship and added 22 runs before Lakshmi’s dismissal for 10. Later, a 26-run partnership between Harleen Deol and Tejal Hasabnis took them to 57 after 20 overs.
Harleen later made a 29-run partnership with Arundhati Reddy before getting dismissed by giving a catch to Nuzhat Parween off Tanusree Sarkar. However, R Saha scored 21 off 44 and S Meena scored 19 off 33, helping India Red to put a total of 149 on board. Simran Dil Bahadur, Tanuja Kanwer and Tanusree Sarkar scalped 2 wickets each for India Blue while Devika Vaidya and Minnu Mani took 1 each.
Chasing the total, India Blue openers Nuzhat Parween and Shafali Verma got off to a flying start. They both added 53 runs in 11.3 overs where Shafali Verma alone scored 37 off 30. She scored with a strike rate of 123.33, including 4 boundaries and a six. However, Arundhati Reddy was able to break the partnership by taking Verma for 37. She struck again in the same over and bowled Minnu mani out for a two-ball duck.
Nuzhat Parween then tried to resurrect the innings with captain Devika Vaidya and both of them added 35 runs. and then 36 runs with Tanusree Sarkar before her dismissal after scoring a half-century. In between, they lost a couple of wickets at a regular interval where Arundhati Reddy bowled both Parween and Sarkar within 3 runs and completed her four-wicket haul. The lower order added the last couple of runs and India Red conceded 15 extra runs; which guided India Blue to chase down the target with 28 balls to spare.
India Blue will play against India Green tomorrow on April 21.
India Blue 152/7 (N Parween 51, A Reddy 4/25) beat India Red 149/10 (H Deol 46, S Bahadur 2/20) by 3 wickets.
