The hosts England finally announces their preliminary World cup squad. The same will be finalised after England completes playing their one day series with Pakistan on May 19. However one can hardly foresee any big changes in one month from now except probably the introduction of a highly rated Jofra Archer as a part of their bowling arsenal based on how actually he performs in the Pakistan series.
The batting stocks are arguably the best in the World by a few distance. It is filled with quality and hardhitting strokeplayers right from number one, with Jason Roy, Johny Bairstow, Ewin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Alex Hales and allrounders in Moin Ali and Ben Stokes. Of course Joe Root will be there at 3 to provide stability and the whole team of strokeplayers can bat around him.
The wicketkeeping stocks are in safe hands with both Buttler and Bairstow and both of them will be in 1st eleven for their batting prowess.
However as far as the bowling goes ,England have chosen Adil Rashid ,the leggie and allrounder Moin Ali, the offie as their 2 spinners and extra batter Joe Denly being a backup spin option as is Root with his useful off spin. In the fast bowling stocks ,England have gone with fiery Mark Wood, Tom Curran, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, left armer David Willey and Liam Plunket and in this list most of the bowlers are decent lower order batsmen. However it has to be said the barring Mark Wood, the English bowling lacks a bit of raw pace though there are different type of bowlers like the left arm angle and swing of David Willey, Tom Curran who can bowl accurate yorkers, Ben Stokes and Plunket are bowlers who may get important breakthroughs and can bowl quick occasionally . English bowlers do require a bit of help from the pitch mostly to get going. Now it remains to be seen whether Jofra Archer performs well in Pakistan series to get the selectors nod.
Overall the England batting arsenal looks extremely strong and best amongst all teams but their are some reservations about their bowling strength as it lacks bit of raw pace ,and hence England will be hoping that Archer gives a good account of himself v Pakistan, to force his way in and bloster the pace attack. His slower balls and scorching yorkers will be a handful for any team.
If Archer is indeed taken in , Joe Denly then will become the likeliest candidate to be replaced.
Thus rival bowling attacks will be wary of facing this English batting lineup. However the bowling group needs to lift their game when they approach their job to restrict the opposition batting.
