Robin Bist ,the ex-Rajasthan Ranji captain had a very candid interview with cricview on Instagram live on 28th June 2020, Sunday. . It was a very interesting interview where variety of topics relating to Indian cricket were openly discussed. Robin was vocal about selection processes in the Indian squad. He maintains that Ranji trophy /1st class cricket should be the platform from where the selections for Indian team should happen rather than new players getting selected directly from IPL. There is no point in holding Ranji Trophy if IPL is given bigger importance in Indian team selection. He was critical about few selections of Indian World cup squad of 2019 namely Rayudu replaced at the last moment by Vijay Shankar. Robin is also of the view that the age of 30 plus should not be a bar for selections as he feels that anybody performing well and fit irrespective of age should be in line for selection. He cited the examples of Saurashtra, Karnataka and Bengal Ranji teams who have been doing well in Ranji as they select the team with right blend of experience and youth and bring up good young players from grassroot level.
Robin feels that Dhoni alone should not be blamed for India’s semis loss in World cup since other players are also equally responsible and needed to contribute and Indian team is over reliant on just 2-3 players for team performance.
Robin Bist feels that politicians should keep away from cricket ,which should ideally be run by former cricketers and proper scouts should be used for eyeing talent around the country which will help Indian cricket in the long run. India has very good talent but that can only be nurtured if we have proper system in place regarding selection processes .
Bist also disclosed the harsh reality of runs alone not mattering for Indian senior team selection in many cases and this is impacting lots of careers with people getting demoralised. Hence proper selection environment is important .
On playing for Rajasthan, Bist stated that first one need to get admitted in a proper coaching centre Gradually truckloads of runs are required at club and district level to draw attention for final selection at state level. Big hundreds are required on consistent basis to force selections to state team .
About the best bowlers in domestic cricket, Bist mentioned the names of Pragyan Ojha, Munaf Patel and Ashok Dinda. He mentions Gautam Gambhir as his all model and looks up on his passion, dedication and hunger for runs.
Being a very capable batsman at domestic level himself with 6000 plus runs at 46 average from 100 plus matches ,Robin Bist was very forthright and candid in his views on various aspects of Indian cricket and dwelled on its harsh realities.
Lots of things for BCCI to ponder .
