Considered to be one of the premier domestic T20 cricket tournaments of the nation, named after cricketer, Syed Mushtaq Ali marked its tenth edition in 2019. Ali served Indian cricket from the pre-independence period for more than 3 decades. The right handed opening batsmen hold the record of maiden test century by an Indian. The tournament is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Marking its debut in 2009/10, when Maharashtra were crowned as the champions, the cricket domestic championship was all set to grab the attention of the fans as it completed a decade of exciting matches. The 10th edition of “India’s premier domestic T20 tournament” commenced from February 21, 2019. With 140 matches scheduled over the span of 22 days, 37 teams across the states and zones of India will be seen in power packed action for grabbing their hands on the prestigious title.
The tournament marks its significance as various domestic players eye to create an impact among the selectors to represent the Indian national cricket team. On the other hand, few players embrace their journey on making a solid comeback through their performance on the field. Mumbai faced Sikkim on the opening day of tournament, not aware of the script it’s going to finish upon. Shreyas Iyer smacked a blazing 147 off 55 balls to help Mumbai post a total of 258/4 in 20 overs which seemed convincingly impossible after the team were reduced to 22 for 2 against Sikkim. With the opening duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw failing to carry on their innings, Shreyas Iyer partnered with Suryakumar Yadav, to not only make sure the team posts a defendable target, but also made sure that the team announced its arrival in the competition with a bang. With 200 plus runs partnership, the duo showcased no mercy on the Sikkim bowling unit. Iyer recorded the highest score by an Indian in T20 beating the previous best of 128* by Rishabh Pant achieved in the previous edition of IPL playing for Delhi Daredevils against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Mumbai attained a comfortable victory against Sikkim by a margin of 154 runs gaining its brownie points in the tournament. With the competition being far away from the finishing line, such powerpack performance by the participating teams will certainly catch the attention of the selectors and the cricketing fans.
