After a no result at Sydney, the 2nd T20I was held at Canberra in lovely crisp sunshine. Batting first Pakistan started fluently with dazzling strokeplay from skipper Babar Azam . However Fakkar Zaman (2) continued his wretched form with very little support coming from middle order till a late surge by Iftikhar Ahmed (62 off 34 balls, 3 sixes) helped Pakistan to reach 150 from a precarious position. Babar continued his rich vien of form scoring a fluid 50 off 38 balls. Cummins (1/19) and Agar (2/23) looked the best Aussie bowlers for the night.
In reply both Warner (20 off 11) and Finch (197 off 14) started aggressively in powerplay but were jolted by Amir and Irfan within the powerplay, the latter getting some revenge on Finch after being mauled at Sydney by Australian captain. From 2/48 in powerplay, it was all Steve Smith show for the rest of the innings as he went about his run making in clinical fashion hitting an imperious pulled six off the tourist’s best bowler Mohammed Amir to put the pressure right back on Pakistan. With support from young Ben McDermott (21) ,Smith’s ability to find the gaps easily and outthink the opposition made the run chase a mere formality as Pakistan were unable to make any more inroads. Smith’s 80 notout came off 51 balls with as Australia cruised past Pakistan’s score to win by 7 wickets and take 1-0 series lead.
