Following a marginal defeat in Vishakhapatnam, India geared up for the last shortest format clash against Australia at the Mangalam Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Having prepared for the fierce top batting order, Glen Maxwell seemed to be out of portion for the Men in Blue. The coin flipped in favour of Aaron Finch as the home side was put to bat first on a slowish pitch. With statistics revealing an distinct advantage for the team chasing, having won 6 out of equal T20 internationals being played till date, the ball was in the visitor’s court before the game resumed. Despite the slowing down of the wicket at Chinnaswamy over the years, the game was expected to be a high scoring thriller between the cricketing giants. All eyes were on India to repeat the feat from the last T20I encounter against England in February 2017, when India won by a comfortable margin of 75 runs after amassing 202 for six.
Virat Kohli’s knock of 72 off 38 balls accompanied by MS Dhoni’s quick 40 off 23 deliveries went in vain as the impressive target of 191 proved to a cakewalk for the Aussies. Dominating performance from Glen Maxwell helped the team to sweep the series against India. The all-rounder smashed 113* (55) including 7 boundaries and 9 maximums with an aggressive strike rate of 205.45 and shared two 50+ stands with D’Arcy Short and Peter Handscomb to guide Australia to victory with 2 balls to spare. Having failed to repeat the magic playing with the big boys, post impressive performance in IPL, Siddhart Kaul , replacing Umesh Yadav from the initial T20 faced the same axe as both the players leaked 14 and 9 runs in the last overs of 1st & 2nd match respectively, thereby unable to defend their provinces.
Taking to Twitter, former cricketers and statisticians had their words of praise for the belligerent performance by Maxi who not only demolished the hopes of millions of Indian cricket fans, but also helped Australia to berth their first series win in India in span of 10 years.
