Over the years Pakistan have produced lots of talented Cricketers. In both batting and bowling department Pakistan cricket is blessed with these talented Cricketers. In the recent past Pakistan cricket have seen a downfall. After the infamous terrorist attack on Srilankan players foreign teams have stopped touring Pakistan. Although recently teams like Zimbabwe,Srilanka,World XI have toured Pakistan. In this period few talented Cricketers held the flag of Pakistani cricket high. Umar Akmal , brother of Pakistani wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Akmal’s younger brother is one of those few talented Cricketers.
Umar Akmal’s cricketing career took a major blow after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to ban him for 3 years for not reporting the corruption approaches under PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code. The news was officially announced by PCB on their official Twitter handle today. Committee ruled that Akmal had violated the Article 2.4.4 of the PCB’s code of conduct on two occasions.
Incidentally recently Umar Akmal received a temporary suspension ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 where he was set to play for Quetta Gladiators. A show-cause notice by the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code was served to Umar but he decided not to challenge PCB’s decision . Umar Akmal, pleaded guilty to not report the fixing offers, which led to his provisional suspension on February 20 this year.
Umar Akmal recently made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. He disrespected the trainers by taking off his shirt and asking them if his body was unfit for playing international cricket in one of his practice sessions in 2020. This act did not go down too well with the PCB as they were forced to impose a penalty on Umar Akmal. Later, the PCB said that the incident happened due to a misunderstanding and Umar offered his regrets for the incident.
29-year-old, who debuted in 2009, has represented Pakistan in 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20Is.for his country. He has registered more than 5000 international runs across all formats.
Incidentally this is not the first time that Umar Akmal has got into a trouble. According to many he is the ‘spoiled’brat of Pakistani cricket. Hr had a feud with former Pakistani cricket coach Micky Arthur as well.
Back in the year 2017 PCB issued a show cause notice to out-of-favour middle-order batsman for going to the media with a complaint that head coach Mickey Arthur abused him and had barred him from practicing at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).His complaint was that Arthur verbally abused him in front of chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq. He also claimed that other players were victims of regular abuse from the national coach.
Akmal then said ” Arthur told me to play club cricket. No player stepped in to ask him not to use such language for a Pakistan international cricketer . It’s not befitting of Arthur to abuse Pakistani players.” He also claimed that he was dropped from the team for the Champions Trophy after unjustified warning and wasn’t allowed to take the fitness test.
In his reply Arthur brushed aside all allegations levelled against him by saying, “He wanted to use Grant Flower’s services for batting. I told him he must earn the right to use the support staff and should first play club cricket. Nobody here should be taken for granted.”
Going by his past Umar Akmal is known for creating controversies throughout his playing career either related to discipline or fitness. He has been involved in regular spats with team members like Junaid Khan. In the backdrop of all this a 3 year cricketing ban at this juncture of his career literally means the end of his cricketing career.
