Video watch : Michael Slater and Mark Waugh’s excellent 100s v Pakistan Brisbane Test 1999

Australia during the 1990s , as in some of their past successful eras  ,was richly endowed with great batting talent and the same was on display vs Pakistan at Gabba test in 1999 series. That test started very well for Pakistan as they piled up a decent 367 helped by 50plus knocks  from Saeed Anwar, Imzamam ul Haq and Mohammad Yousuf . With a strong bowling attack at their disposal it was expected that Pakistan will put pressure on the Aussie batting but instead ,the ever aggressive Michael Slater came out all guns blazing and hit a magnificent 169 putting the Pakistan bowling attack including the rapidly quick Shoaib Akhtar to the sword . Slater’s innings was full of dazzling shots all round the ground and he was later joined by the majestic Mark Waugh as both proceeded to demoralise the opposition bowlers.

One of the most elegant batsman of the lot  to have come out of Australia in the 90s has been Mark Waugh . His elegant strokeplay and delightful use of his supple wrists was a treat to watch even for the opposition but he could cause massive damage to the opposition with his effortless strokes and on this day he looked in great touch playing majestic shots all around Gabba on a fine batting wicket to score exactly 100. His stand with Slater and later a dazzling 81 by Gilchrist on his debut took Australia to a mammoth 575 , a 200 plus lead . The Aussies scored so quickly that there was still enough time to force a result as it proved with Pakistan dismissed for 281 in 2nd innings ,helped by Anwar’s 119. The resultant target of 74 was mopped up easily by the openers as Australia won by 10 wickets.
