25th June 1983 as we all know was a momentous day in Indian cricket ,when India beat the overwhelming favourites West Indies by 43 runs at Lords in the biggest ever upset in cricket history. Every generation of Indian cricket fans know how the final match panned out as it gets frequently telecasted on landmark days in India’s calender apart from 25th June.
Here we will just analyse ,which were the major moments of that final which turned the match in India’s favour :
1. Viv Richards dismissal : Regarded widely as the biggest moment in the game. India earlier only managed 183 which looked very inadequate given the West Indies batting lineup. After early loss of Greenidge , Richards stepped in and looked in his typical arrogant self and in fine nick , rapidly scoring the runs mostly though great drives along the ground. He chose Madanlal for special treatment scoring freely off him till finally Madan banged one short to lure Richards (33 off 28 balls, 7 fours) into a pull ,which he accepted and played the first shot of his innings in the air . The skipper was patrolling midwicket and he ran back to take an astonishing and a high pressure catch as if Richards was missed ,the game would have been over in 30 overs. What a great catch it was by Kapil Dev !!
2. Lloyd pulling a hamstring: Lloyd came out to bat at 50/2 and while taking a single twitched his hamstring. Haynes came out as his runner but Lloyd was unable to execute free movements while driving and that proved vital to India’s benefit as it turned out soon.
3. Quick dismissals of Gomes and Lloyd : This was definitely a huge moment in the game as even after Richards dismissal, West Indies needed just one solid partnership in test match mode to win the game as target was very small. Gomes and Lloyd were the two appropriate players for that but Madanlal with his tail up made Gomes edge an outswinger and Binny bowled an intelligent fuller delivery to lure a stiff footed , injured Lloyd into a drive which he spooned to extra cover. West Indies 66/5 and India now right on top.
4. Jeff Dujon dismissal: Dujon and Marshall had a very fruitful partnership after they joined hands at 76/6 when Bacchus was dismissed. They added 43 runs and increasingly looked worrysome for India with a small target to defend. However at 119/6 , Mohinder Amarnath produced an incutter which Dujon played on to his stumps trying to leave it for 25 and India heaved a huge sigh of relief as Dujon in those days was alone enough to take West Indies over the line having played lots of match changing test match innings upto that point.
The above 4 were definitely big match turning points in that final which finally ended after a gritty last wicket 14 run stand between Holding and Garner , when Amarnath trapped Holding Lbw to give India a 43 run win as the thousands of Indian fans at Lords cricket ground and the roads and street back in India erupted with joy to savour the moment.
This victory will remain India’s greatest moment of cricketing history till the game is alive.
