The World Cup saw the future of Word batting in Srilanka vs West indies match at Chester Le Street on a big ground. Avishka Fernando of Srilanka and Nicholas Pooran of West indies scored awesome centuries as both Srilanka and West Indies played an exciting high scoring match in a dead rubber with both teams out of semi final contention.
Put in to bat first Srilanka started well with the belligerent Kusal Parera and steady Karunaratne (32) in a 1st wicket stand of 93 . Kusal Parera (67 off 51 balls) played some glorious drives and pulls to take Srilanka past 100 before he was runout in a terrible mixup with Avishka. From that point it was 21 year old Avishka Fernando all the way as he showcased glorious strokeplay all round the wicket and his pull shots of the fast bowlers were savage and beautifully timed. Having so much time to play his shots ,Avishka held the innings together and had fruitful stands with a steady Kusal Mendis (39), Mathews (26) and Thiramane (45 off 33 balls) to finally take Srilanka to an imposing score of 338 with he himself scoring a masterly 104(103 balls).
In their chase West Indies kept losing wickets in first half of their innings with Malinga rattling them with 2 early wickets. Thee was flashes of resistance from Gayle (35) and Heytmer (29) but wickets kept falling—71/4, 145/5, 191/6 as Pooran held up one end with limited support till Holder (26) had a good stand with him. Later Fabian Allen (51 off 32 balls) played a quickfire knock and looked to be taking West indies to a win as Pooran started playing tremendous shots and West indies looked within striking distance around 42-43 overs mark. However a shocking runout broke the stand and Pooran was left to do the job on his own. after completing his brilliant 100, Pooran stepped up a gear till Angelo Mathews , bowling for 1st time after Dec 2017 induced and edge off his 1st ball and send back the 24 year old West Indian hero for 118 off 103 balls. Windies looked deflated after Pooran’s exit and finally fell short by 23 runs with Malinga being the best bowler with 3/55 . Avishka Fernando was the player of the match..
