The Rohit Sharma saga continues.
Kumar Sangakkara’s record of 4 100s in a single World cup gets eclipsed by the prolific Rohit Sharma as he completed his 5th World cup 2019 100 vs Srilanka to take India to the top of league table. Rohit’s typically classy strokeplay completely dwarfed the less impressive Srilankan bowling attack as India steamrollered over Srilanka by 7 wickets. While Rohit scored 103 off 94 balls, KL Rahul scored a confidence boosting 111 off 118 balls to seal his opening spot as they shared the biggest opening stand of 189 runs in 2019 world cup. Rahul took his time to settle but soon opened up after his 50 to play his brand of exquisite strokes. Later Kohli (34no) completed the formalities to reach the target of 265 for loss of 3 wickets .
Earlier a dogged fighting 100 by Angelo Mathews (113) and his important partnership with Thirimane (53) took Srilanka to some respectability of 264/7 after they were struggling at 55/4 in the face of some impressive fast bowling from Bumrah (3/37) and a tight Ravindra Jadeja ( 1/40 off 10 overs). Jadeja ,who played his 1st match of this World cup was brilliant in the field saving lots of boundaries in point region to frustrate the Srilankan batsmen. However the Indians will be a bit worried with the bowling form of both Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/73) and Kuldeep (1/58) since both looked below their best.
With this win and with South Africa beating Australia in other match ,India and Indian fans had their wish of playing a currently misfiring New Zealand in the 1st semis. With the blackcaps currently going through a momentum loss ,the Indians should be fancying their chances of winning the semi final clash and playing the finals on 14th July .
However funny things have happened in cricket .
